Four main authors drafted and edited the content of the Oral Health Atlas. Nine authors contributed to the publication and two reviewers checked the content prior to publication. Click on the names below to learn more about them:

FDI World Dental Federation

The FDI is a federation of National Dental Associations and as such, its main roles are to bring together the world of dentistry, to represent the dental profession of the world and to stimulate and facilitate the exchange of information across all borders with the aim of optimal oral health for all peoples.

 FDI Mission Statements:
  • The Voice of Dentistry - To be the worldwide, authoritative and independent voice of the dental profession
  • Optimal Oral Health - To promote optimal oral and general health for all peoples
  • Members' Support - To promote the interests of the Member Associations and their members
  • Information Transfer - To advance and promote the ethics, art, science and practice of dentistry

WHO Collaborating Center Oral Health Cape Town

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Health, located at the Faculty of dentistry at the University of the Western Cape was designated in November 1994 with the appointment of Professor Martin Hobdell as its first Director. The Centre was recently re-designated for a four year period from 2009 to 2012 and has Professor Sudeshni Naidoo at it’s helm.
The terms of reference include the following:
  • Establish distance learning and other appropriate training programmes for oral health personnel in the African Region
  • To develop and undertake research on infectious diseases in dentistry including Hepatitis, HIV, TB
  • To support initiatives and carry out research on oral health policy
  • To develop and undertake research surveillance on oral lesions of high morbidity and mortality like Burkitt’s lymphoma and Noma
  • Prepare and publish appropriate oral health educational and promotional material
With these terms of reference, the UWC WHO CC also provides expertise and support to the WHO and countries in the African region upon request.

International Association for Dental Research (IADR)

The International Association for Dental Research (IADR), headquartered in Alexandria, Va., USA, is a nonprofit organization with more than 11,000 members worldwide.
Its mission is:
  • to advance research and increase knowledge for the improvement of oral health worldwide;
  • to support and represent the oral health research community; and
  • to facilitate the communication and application of research findings.

International Federation of Dental Educator Associations (IFDEA)

The International Federation of Dental Educators and Associations (IFDEA) is a global community of dental educators who have joined together to improve oral health worldwide by sharing knowledge and raising standards.
IFDEA contributes to improving global health by improving oral health. IFDEA serves as an axis of information, best practices, exchange programmes, news and professional development for the many regional dental education associations, academic dental institutions and individual dental educators worldwide. 
IFDEA will achieve its mission by:
  • Operating The Global Network for Dental Education, a web-based knowledge sharing resource for the dental education community.
  • Facilitating a better understanding of issues of diversity and inequality in oral health care and education.
  • Pooling international intellectual resources and expertise in dental education.
  • Developing an accessible repository of evidence-based and useful information to support dental educators.
  • Disseminating relevant and current information to dental educators on a global basis.
  • Providing assistance in helping dental educators to implement recent developments in educational methodologies, research, biomedical sciences, biotechnology, information technology, and clinical dentistry.
  • Promoting international peer collaboration, consultation, and dialogue in seeking to address oral health challenges on a global basis, while respecting regional priorities and structures.
